MICHAEL | KILLER MIKE
7.28.2023: Micheal is easily as good as Killer’s other project Run The Jewels records. Great fellow ATL quest rappers CeeLo Green and Andrea 3000 amongst others. I love this guy as a rapper, as a speaker, as an activist. Always sharp and as fuck.
Michael is the sixth studio album by American rapper Killer Mike, released on June 16, 2023. It is his first solo album in 11 years, following 2012’s R.A.P. Music, and his first album since forming the acclaimed duo Run the Jewels with El-P. The album was produced by No I.D. and features guest appearances from CeeLo Green, Mozzy, Young Thug, 6lack, Eryn Allen Kane, Jagged Edge, André 3000, Future, Currensy, 2 Chainz, Kaash Paige, Blxst, Fabo, El-P and Ty Dolla Sign.
The album was inspired by Killer Mike’s personal life, especially his experience of becoming a father and losing his mother and grandmother. He wrote the songs as letters to his daughter, Marigold, and as tributes to his late relatives. He also addressed topics such as war, love, faith, and nature, and expressed his views on the state of the world and the black community. The album’s sound is influenced by gospel, soul, funk and hip hop, and showcases Killer Mike’s diverse musical tastes and influences.
Michael received critical acclaim from various publications, such as Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and Paste. Critics praised Killer Mike’s musical growth, powerful vocals, and emotional depth. The album also performed well commercially, reaching number one on the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart and number two on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart. The album’s first single, “Sea Star”, was released on February 7, 2023, along with an official video that pays tribute to Killer Mike’s home state of Georgia.
Michael is a testament to Killer Mike’s creativity and passion, as well as a heartfelt gift to his daughter. The album is a captivating blend of soulful melodies, stirring lyrics, and dynamic arrangements that showcase Killer Mike’s talent and vision. It is an album that invites listeners to reflect on their own lives and hopes for the future.
